The Cypress Forest in Caddo Lake

Caddo Lake is home to living trees that still grow even in their semi-submerged state. Located on the Texas-Louisiana border in the town of Uncertain, Caddo Lake is home to the world’s largest cypress forest. Caddo is also Texas’ only naturally formed lake and covers 32,700 acres of a maze of channels and meandering bayous within thousands of acres of Spanish moss draped cypress. The growth rings on the present day cypress trees have as many as 400 to 600 years worth. Caddo Lake was also the site of the world’s first off-shore drilling for oil.

Shards of Turquoise Ice Jut Out of the World’s Largest Lake

Lake Baikal, located in the southern part of eastern Siberia in Russia, is an incredible natural wonder of the world that one can only hope to visit at least once in their lifetime. It’s not just the oldest freshwater lake on Earth, at 20 to 25 million years old, it’s also one of the largest and deepest, holding an astounding one-fifth of the world’s freshwater.

House Weinfelden (2012) by K_m Architektur

Photographed by Sabrina Scheja

Location: Weinfelden, Switzerland

A floating design and the use of natural materials using concrete, glass and wood as structural material characterize the single family home. Besides the structural members that establish contact with the ground, the rest of the house is constructed out of wood.

The different levels of the residential home are clearly divided by floors. The overhanging parts of the upper volume shelter the entrance area. The upper floor houses the private bedrooms of the parents with a great rooftop terrace. The ground floor contains a generous dining and living space with a stove acting as a room divider as well as two more bedrooms for the children. Positioned in front of the dining and living area, a roofed terrace encircles the building and links the interior and the exterior space through room-high glazing. The overhanging parts of the upper roof shelter the balcony and give a shade to the broad expanses of glazing, protecting the house from excessive solar grain in the summertime. In the winter, the sunshine becomes a passive source of energy. The back of the house appears to be more closed.

"よく言われるようにAPIの設計というのは難しい。最初からすべての使われ方を想定することなんかできないし、使われ始めてから判明する問題も多い。いくら時間をかけて考えたって、最初から完璧なAPIを設計するなんて無理なのだ。とりあえず作ってみて、使い始めてから徐々に改善していく、という方が現実的でスピードも早い。何しろ、延々とAPIを議論をする代わりに、さっさと製品に機能を追加してリリースできるのだ。"
